The foundation of Western massage therapy, using long flowing strokes to promote full-body relaxation and circulation.
Swedish massage is the most widely recognised form of Western bodywork and the foundation upon which many other modalities are built. Developed in the 19th century by Per Henrik Ling, it employs five primary techniques: effleurage (long, gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (deep, circular movements), and vibration. These techniques work together to increase oxygen in the blood, decrease muscle toxins, and improve flexibility while reducing tension. For private residence clients, Swedish massage provides the ideal balance of therapeutic benefit and profound relaxation — a treatment that can be enjoyed daily without the intensity of deeper modalities.
